Kelly Thomas and His Families Fight for Justice

On July 5, 2011 a man by the name of Kelly Thomas was brutally beaten by Fullerton Police at the Fullerton Transportation Center. Many individuals were able to witness the beating first hand. Individuals claim that they yelled for the police to stop, but they continued to taze and beat poor Kelly Thomas. Witnesses and Kelly’s attorney say that he was already brain dead when he reached the hospital. On July 10th was the day that he was officially announced dead and taken off of life support.
When the story was released the media had every bit of information you can imagine. All local news channels were shocked as they reported Kelly’s beating. It was clear by the media and by individuals that Kelly Thomas was brutally beaten. As I sat back and watched the news, read various articles and blogs on the internet, I asked myself why it is taking so long for prosecutors to take legal action. The media has made Kelly’s story their leading topic for over 2 months now, and still no decision or verdict has been made. On September 6, 2011 KTLA news at 10 showed the pictures of Kelly Thomas when he reached the hospital. Again it was clear that the police went extremely far.
Why is this story so popular? Shouldn’t the media focus on something more important, I mean transients get killed every day? Why are they making a big deal about this beating? Police beat civilians everyday and get away with it. These are questions many individuals ask when they see the same story constantly. The reason why this story is so important to the media is because they are finally starting to notice police brutality among civilians. It is true, individuals get beaten constantly by police, the difference is that this is the only story that’s making it public. The media is in a sense speaking for the individuals that have not been heard or even known about. I feel that the public is finally tired of the police taking advantage of their powers. I also believe that Kelly Thomas’s case will later prevent police from doing the same thing to other innocent individuals. If prosecutors are fair and police do not cover obvious evidence up, Kelly Thomas and his family will be able to make major changes in today’s crooked society.
